I use clay to adapt the body I was given to extend and abstract the form I was assigned, making sculptural instruments out of clay that helps others extend themselves in the viewing. Through breath and touch, the viewing process becomes an extension of the making, analogous to my trans* body which has undergone and will continue to go through personal transitional experiences. Undergoing multiple firings, the clay body adapts and reacts to its environment, similar to my own experiences of passing socially. As objects that continue to grow throughout their lives of malleable and intuitive function, these ceramics inherit new glaze or treatments as they age parallel to my trans* body. By relating performatively and bodily to the vessels I create, I work with clay’s ability to express its trans*ness through an unending making and responding process. The give and take through function of breath and vocalization promote individuality in viewership and sound, interaction changing depending upon each viewer. My work uses viewership and the viewer's surrounding forms of communication to extend and abstract what is assigned, in an effort to engage others in nonverbal musical communication.
